The county has been using the City of LaGrange to transport and dispose of the county’s solid waste for many years but decided to competitively bid out this service to see if less expensive alternatives were available. After the bidding process concluded, Waste Management and their subsidiary, Waste Away Group of Opelika, AL, was the low bidder at $24.85 per ton. The only other bidder was the City of LaGrange at $37.00 per ton. LaGrange currently charges the county $41.18 per ton. The Board of County Commissioners, during their October 17, 2017 meeting, approved a five-year agreement with Waste Away for them to transport the county’s solid waste from the county-owned transfer station located on Barnes Mill Road to their Salem Waste Disposal Center located in Opelika, AL beginning November 1, 2017. This move is estimated to save the county in excess of $200,000 per year or over $1,000,000 during the 5-year contract period.
