Phases I, II, and III of the Man O’ War Railroad Recreation Trail are now opened. The ten-foot wide asphalt pedestrian trail begins in downtown Pine Mountain and continues to behind the Mountain Creek Inn, a distance of about three miles. Phases I, II, and III had a construction cost of about $980,000 and were funded by a $512,000 Transportation Enhancement grant, $100,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, $200,000 Recreational Trails Program grant, and county SPLOST-2019 and TSPLOST funds. Phase IV, which is currently being designed, continues the pedestrian trail an additional 1.5 miles to the Callaway Country Store, atop of Pine Mountain. Phase IV also includes the rehabilitation of the historic railroad bridge over U.S. 27 near the main entrance to Callaway Gardens. Phase IV is expected to cost about $1.2M, funded by county TSPLOST funds, and is scheduled to be completed by late summer 2021. Future additions to the paved pedestrian trail will be dependent on receiving grant funds.
