The three-member Board of Tax Assessors is appointed by the Board of Commissioners for three year terms. The Board of Tax Assessors hires a Chief Appraiser to run the day-to-day operations of the department.

Sales Tax Rates

Harris County has an 8% sales tax rate distributed as follows:

4% is allocated to the state.

1% is allocated to Harris County Local Option Sales Tax (LOST). The county receives 73%, Hamilton receives 5.6%, Pine Mountain receives 7.35%, Shiloh receives 2.8%, Waverly Hall receives 5.65% and West Point receives 5.6%.

1% is allocated to Harris County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax hat was voter approved for an additional six years beginning April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2025 for specific purposes.

1% is allocated to Harris County Board of Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) that was voter approved for an additional five years beginning January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2021 for specific purposes.

1% is allocated to the regional Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) that was voter approved for ten years beginning January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2022 for transportation purposes.
