Not Just Firefighters
The County contracts with ten volunteer fire departments that provide fire protection county-wide. These ten volunteer fire departments maintain 18 stations and substations located throughout the County. A portion of the City of West Point is located within Harris County and that city has a paid fire department. The County provides each department with annual stipends for their operations and equipment purchases, performs repairs on their vehicles, funds property and vehicle insurances, workers’ compensation insurance, and accident and sickness insurance. A Council of Fire Chiefs meets monthly to coordinate fire activities.
