The Board of County Commissioners recently updated its hotel-motel tax ordinance dating back to 1991 and increased the hotel-motel tax rate from 3% to 5% effective January 1, 2019. This increase only applies to those properties located in the unincorporated area of the county and does not include properties located within the city limits. This tax and its increased rate will generate about $55,000 per year and will enable the county, through the local chamber of commerce, the ability to promote the county, its events and attractions, and FDR State Park even more. This added promotion has the ability to attract additional overnight visitors to the community. The highest hotel-motel tax rate allowed by state law is 8%.
