The Harris County Water Works Department will begin installing new and updated water meters for county water customers beginning November 2018 and continue for about 18 months until all 8,500 meters have been replaced. The new and updated water meters are based on Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology that will allow Water Works employees to drive by water meters to obtain the readings rather than obtaining the readings by hand. This update of water meters to a new technology will allow the Water Works Department to be more efficient and water meter readings to be more accurate. Badger Meter, Inc. was the low bidder for this upgrade at $1.2M for meter cost only. County Water Works employees will perform the installation. In general, the installation will begin on he east side of the county and continue westward and will be performed during weekdays and on week-ends. This project is funded through a 20-year Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) loan at a 0.89% interest rate.
