The Harris County Board of Tax Assessors will be mailing the 2019 Annual Assessment Notices to all county property owners on or about May 14, 2019. The assessment notice will include several pieces of information including the current fair market value of your real property, the previous value of your real property, and the last day to file an appeal of your property’s value which will be Friday, June 28, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. To file an appeal and to obtain the correct forms, please visit the Tax Assessor’s Office located at the Harris County courthouse, first floor, 102 North College Street in Hamilton or call 706-628-5171 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information about your property, click here to visit the Tax Assessor’s website.
If your home sustained storm damage from the tornado that occurred earlier this year, the property values that are in the Assessment Notice will not take that damage into consideration since Georgia law requires that our office value all property as it existed on January 1, 2019. The Georgia law states,
‘Assessment date. Code section 48-5-10 provides that each return by a property owner shall be for property held and subject to taxation on January 1 of the tax year. The appraisal staff shall base their decisions regarding the taxability, uniform assessment, and valuation of real property on the circumstances of such property on January 1 of the tax year for which the assessment is being prepared. When real property is transferred to a new owner or converted to a new use, the circumstances of such property on January 1 shall nevertheless be considered as controlling.’
If your home has not been repaired by the end of 2019, please contact the Tax Assessor’s Office so that we may review your property and take the storm damage into consideration for the 2020 tax year valuation.
The Assessment Notice that you will be receiving in May is not a tax bill and please do not send payments. The actual tax bill will be sent by the Tax Commissioner’s Office around the first of October with taxes due by December 20. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
