The county’s solid waste transfer station, located at 4070 Barnes Mill Road in Hamilton, receives new drive-over weigh scales to replace the existing scales that were 25+ years old. The old scales were 11 feet wide x 30 feet long and could not accommodate many long vehicles that are used in today’s solid waste collection and transportation. The new scales are 11 feet wide x 70 feet long to accommodate those newer vehicles. The transfer station processes over 1,400 tons of solid waste each month or about 16,800 tons per year and this amount is increasing each year. Scale Systems of Columbus, Georgia submitted the low bid of $111,231 to provide, install, and maintain the new drive-over scales. Funding for this project was included in the FY 2019-20 Solid Waste Fund budget. The Solid Waste Fund receives funding from the $149 solid waste fee on the annual property tax bill. The entire installation is scheduled to be completed by mid-February.
